Benjamin served in the Civil War with several of his older brothers. Enrolled 26 Aug 1861 as Private in Co "G" 38th Regt. Ill. Infantry Volunteers. Discharged Chattanooga TN 15 Sep 1864. Record shows taken prisoner 31 Dec 1862 & paroled. 28 Feb 1863 Taken prison & paroled but parole being worthless he resumed his duty. June 30 1863 Absent, Irregularly paroled. Ordered to our rear. Prisoner of War record shows him "captured & paroled at Lavergue TN Dec 30 1862. Remark "Driving team on Dic. Train" Sent from Columbus OH to Cincinnati OH 18 Jul 1863. Reported there same day & sent to B.B. MO 21 Jul 1863. Reported there 23 July 1863 present there 31 Jul 1863 & August 31, 1863. National Archives Pension Papers from Civil War.

Benjamin was the postmaster at Malakoff, Texas in 1897.

His first wife was Emma Rochester Landreth - married 12 Jan 1860 in Manito, Mason Co IL. She is buried in Sedan, Kansas. His second wife (in the photo), was Harriett Tidwell Munkus.
