SHELTON, STRUCK BY TRUCK ON HIGHWAY, FATALLY HURT

Police Probe Mishap; Exonerate Driver

Beldon A. Shelton, 61, McMinnville, died in a hospital here Friday after being struck by a logging truck while walking on the McMinnville-Sheridan highway near the Cozine creek bridge on the south edge of the city Thursday night.

It was the first traffic fatality in Yamhill county since E.M. Yeaton, 84-year-old Sheridan resident, died in a hospital here Aug. 28 after walking into the side of a truck at Sheridan.

The truck which struck Mr. Shelton was operated by Willis Emmert, 19, Sweet Home, who was not held by authorities. The driver told investigating officers that he was approaching an oncoming car and when he dimmed his lights he was unable to see Mr. Shelton walking on the side of the road toward the truck. The truck was owned by Emmert Bros., Sweet Home.

Coroner Glen S. Macy said the pedestrian received a fractured skull and internal injuries in the accident which occurred about 10 feet outside the McMinnville city limits at the intersection of Blaine street with the highway. Time of the accident was 6:30 p.m.

Mr. Shelton last week filed an action in circuit court here asking $5600 damages for injuries allegedly received in a traffic mishap near Newberg Aug. 13. He was a passenger in a car driven by Vaughn Shelton and owned by Harry Powell, McMinnville, which was involved in a collision with a truck owned by E.O. Douglas and driven by Robert L. Chase.
