Nathaniel Goltry was born in Somerset County, New Jersey on May 11, 1794. He passed away on April 1, 1871 in Lucas County, Iowa.
He served in the New York Militia during the War of 1812 for three months under Captain John Mack. He was discharged at Lewiston, near Niagara Falls, New York in April of 1814.
WAR RECORDS from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. show that Nathaniel "Galtry" served as private in Captain John Mack's Company, 1st Regiment, New York Detached Militia, War of 1812. He appears on the Company Muster Roll for January 13 to April 13, 1814 as "present." He appears on the Company Pay Roll for January 8 to April 13, 1814. His "term of service charged" was 3 months, 9 days; amount of pay, 8 dollars per month; total amount paid, 26 dollars, 40 cents. Under remarks appears: "8 days allowed for returning home."
Under Act of March 3, 1855, "Nathaniel Goltry, Pvt., Capt. John Mack, Col. Harris N.Y. Militia, War of 1812" was awarded Warrant No. 31,334 for 120 acres (bounty land).
He was married to Elizabeth Fitzgerald in 1816 in Pleasant Valley Township, Steuben County, New York. They were the parents of twelve children: Mary, Margaret (Peggy Ann), Harriet, Sarah Ann, David, William, Elizabeth, John, Thomas Nathaniel, Nancy, Jacob Fitzgerald and Philena Jane.
Nathaniel and family migrated by ox team from Pleasant Valley, Steuben County, N.Y, in August, 1829 to Jennings County, Indiana. He was accompanied by his parents, Paul and Rachel Goltry, and his brothers, Paul, William and others.
