Stella Arminda Martin, 90, a resident of Russellville, died Monday, February 16, 2009, at Legacy Lodge Nursing Home.

She was born August 27, 1918, to George Ellison and Vina Elzira Smith Carpenter in the East Point Community where she grew up. She was the granddaughter of Jefferson Davis "J. D." and America Rook Smith and Thomas Addison and Rose Atheny Carpenter. She was a graduate of London High School, attended Arkansas Tech, and taught school in her early adult years. Stella was an active member of the East Point Baptist Church until she moved to the Legacy Lodge in December 2008. She taught children's Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years. She loved to crochet and made clothes for an assortment of dolls and enjoyed reading her Bible and books that enhanced her understanding of the Bible. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence Leland Martin; an adopted son, Irby Bryan Sr.; and a nephew, Arlis Glenn Martin.

Survivors include her nieces, Loretta Spillers and her husband, Kenneth of Little Rock and Sue Etta Delcuze of Austin, Texas; a nephew, Bobby Martin and his wife, Mary Ann of Wylie, Texas; cousins, T. A. Metz and Harold Metz and his wife, Louella, all of London; adopted grandchildren, Ricky Bryan, Sylvia McRea, Ruth Harville, Pamela Wright, Irby Bryan Jr., Malcolm Bryan, Faith Sanderson; and other relatives and friends. She considered Bonnie and Frank Meimerstorf, Vickie Snoddy, Walter and Marilyn Morris, Dub and Shirley Smith, the Rev. Ira and Jo Taylor, her close family, plus her caregivers, Ann Hattabaugh and Laverne Duvall. She stated that Frances Vinson Miller was more like her sister, not just a cousin.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at the East Point Baptist Church with the Rev. Ira Taylor and the Rev. Larry Pless officiating. Burial will be in the East Point Cemetery near Russellville under the direction of Shinn Funeral Service.

Active pallbearers will be Bobby Joe Price, Don Smith, Don White, Kenneth Smith, James Harold Smith, and Tim Meimerstorf. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Meimerstorf, Wayne Nordin, Dub Smith, Vernon Whorton, Jim Sewell, Kenneth Spillers, Dr. James Smith, and the staff at Legacy Lodge Nursing Home.

The visitation will be from 6 - 7 p.m. on Tuesday, at the funeral home.
