AMMC3 U. S. Navy WWII.Rev. John Claude Walters, Jr., age 78, of Blairsville passed away on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 in the Union General Hospital. Rev. Walters was a native of Tampa, FL. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy of WWII. He was ordained as a minister in 1949 in Tampa and attended both Stetson University, Deland, FL, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort worth, TX, receiving his Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern in 1954. Rev. Walters served as pastor at a number of churches in Florida over a span of almost forty years, including Riverside Baptist in Tampa, Webster Avenue Baptist in Lakeland, First Baptist in Lake Worth and Wayside Baptist in Miami and was active in local and state denominational work. He concluded his career by serving as the assistant executive director of the Florida Baptist Convention for six years. Following his retirement, Rev. Walters served as interim pastor at a number of churches, including Friendship Baptist Church in Murphy, NC, where he was a member at the time of his death. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Claude Walters, Sr., and Myrtle Jerkins Walters; sisters, Lorene Little and Juanita Baxter.

Funeral services were held on Friday, December 31, 2004 at 2 p.m. from the Friendship Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
