NASHVILLE — George Washington Rowan Jr., 82, of Nashville, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Riverside Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jimmy Futch and the Rev. Junior Swain officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Lovein Funeral Home. Born June 12, 1926, in Berrien County, Mr. Rowan was the son of George Washington Rowan and Nell Roberson, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by a son, George Stanley Rowan; four brothers, William H. Rowan, James Rowan, Carl Rowan and Durward Rowan; and one sister, Mary Rowan Watson.Mr. Rowan was a retired Civil Service accounting technician and funds manager at Moody Air Force Base. He served for 16 years on the Berrien County Board of Education, with three of those years as chairman. He was a member, deacon, Sunday school teacher and clerk at Riverside Missionary Baptist Church.Mr. Rowan was a graduate of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and was a Navy veteran of World War II.Survivors include his wife, Mary Elaine White Rowan of Nashville; one daughter, Nell Dena (Shannon) Anderson of Sandersville; one son, Charles Kevin (Sarah) Rowan of Albany; one sister, Martha Nell Blackmon of Nashville; and four grandchildren, Sierra Anderson, Ben Anderson, Jonah Rowan and Andrew Rowan.Lovein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
