Greenbush - Menford Brekke, 71, died Monday, August 2, 1999 at Roseau Area Hospital in Roseau.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 6 at Oiland Lutheran Church in Greenbush with Reverend Alan Arneson and Reverend Alvin Sather officiating. Donna Graff was the organist, and special music was provided by the Dybedahl sisters. Casketbearers were Menford's nephews, Mark Holm, Mitch Jorgenson, Scott Hostvedt, Steve Day, Bruce Karevold, Paul Lee and Mike Johnson. Interment was in Oiland Church Cemetery with military honors accorded by Greenbush American Legion Post 88. The Collins Funeral Home of Greenbush was in charge of the arrangements.

Menford Julian Lewis Brekke was born on October 1, 1927 on the Brekke farm in Soler township near Greenbush, the son of Leonard and Rose (Minarik) Brekke. He was baptized and confirmed at Oiland Lutheran Church near his home where he was a life-long member and served on its church council.

He attended school near his home and also attended the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston.

Following his high school graduation, Menford enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a paratrooper. After his discharge in 1947 he returned to the family farm.

On October 2, 1954 he was united in marriage to Ruby Jorgenson at Ross, and the couple has since lived and farmed on the Brekke home farm. Menford was also employed as a welder at Polaris Industries in Roseau from 1969 until his retirement in 1996.

He was a member of the Greenbush American Legion Post 88 and the Sons of Norway. For many years, he served on the boards of Soler township and the former Haug-Leo School.

He enjoyed flowers, yard work, attending auction sales and visiting.

Menford is survived by his wife, Ruby; two sons, Lee (Nancy) of Little Falls and Don of Greenbush; one daughter, Ronna (Gary) Seydel of Badger; five grandchildren; three sisters, Adeline (Defford) Day of Necedah, WI, Lenore (Reuben) Lee of Fergus Falls and LuElla (Gilmore) Karevold of Moorhead; his mother-in-law, Minie Jorgenson of Greenbush; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harvie and one in infancy.
