Mrs. Virginia S. Buchanan, age 84, of Woodbine passed away peacefully early Friday morning, August 8th, 2008.

Mrs. Buchanan is a native of Camden County, Georgia. She was born in Tarboro on August 12, 1923 and is the daughter of the late Elbert and Courtney Liles Southwell. She attended the schools of Camden County. She graduated from North Camden High School in 1940, where she played on the girl's basketball team and was also a former "Miss Camden County". On June 2, 1942 she married Frank Beach Buchanan. During World War II, Virginia helped build Liberty Ships at the J.A. Jones shipyard in Brunswick, Georgia where she was a burner. She left that job to take care of her husband who was wounded in action on Bougainville in the Pacific during the war. In 1958 they moved to Colesburg where they owned and operated Buchanan's General Merchandise until her retirement in the late 1980's. Virginia was an active member of the Woodbine Methodist Church where she received honorary lifetime membership in the United Methodist Women. She served her church in many capacities during her life, including kindergarten teacher. She was active in White Oak and Camden High PTA's and the Camden High Athletic Boosters Club. Virginia was artistically talented in many ways. Her love of china painting was expressed through her many creations and she enjoyed crocheting afghans for family and friends. She loved to knit booties, using the Red Cross pattern from WWII, which was sent overseas for orphans of the war. Her favorite quote, by which she lived by, was "Do a good deed for someone each day".

She leaves behind her children; Jimmy Buchanan (Claudia) of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Henry Buchanan (Sheila) of Kingsland, Ga. and Robert Buchanan (Cindy), Fernandina Beach, Fl.., her grandchildren; James, Mark, Joe, Bucky, Hal, Courtney and Carson, her fourteen great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Frank Buchanan passed away in 1981. She is also preceded in death by her sister Rena Dominy, and brothers Bobby Southwell and Edward Southwell.


Visitation will be held from 7-9 PM, Sunday, August 10th at the funeral home.
Funeral services will held at 11 AM, Monday, August 11th in the Woodbine Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Emery and Rev. Don Wolfgang officiating.

Mrs. Buchanan will be laid to rest next to her husband in their family section at Homeward Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Woodbine Methodist Church
