VESTER E. NELSON (Pub. August 25, 1966)

OMAK – Vester E. Nelson, 57, an Omak farmer and carpenter, died Tuesday in Kirkland of a heart ailment.

He was born in Claiborne Parish, La., July 2, 1909, and married Delorous Crowell in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, May 9, 1942.

He was a member of the Ghost Riders Club and attended the Presbyterian Church at Omak.

Through the years he and his wife were well-known for befriending homeless children. They took them into their home and made it possible for each to attend high school. Several are now married or have jobs and live in other parts of the country, but all still regard the Nelsons as their family and the residence at Omak as home.

Surviving are: his widow; a daughter, Dianne, at home; a stepson, Jack Stevens, Portland, Ore., and the foster children, Vivian San Daine and Max Emory, both at the family home; Dale and John Lathrop, Ephrata; Ralph Lathrop, Tokyo, Japan; Don Lathrop, The Dalles, Ore.; Skeets Wallace, Bowling Green, Ky.; Louise Smith, Omak; Ruth Davenport, Snohomish; Betty Underwood, in Arizona, and Elizabeth Wright, Portland, Ore.; 22 foster grandchildren; a brother Elkins Nelson, Portland, and a brother Jack, and three sisters, Ruth, Etta and Rae, all in Louisiana.
