Roger was the greatest guy you could have for a friend. He had a sense of humor like no one I have ever known. He rode my mom`s school bus in junior and senior high and used to give her a fit or two, all in fun. I met him through a mutual friend. It seemed he liked working on old cars, just like I did. For two summers in a row we probably went through a dozen or more cars each year, doing what work they needed and selling them so we could buy a couple more to work on.
He managed to find them pretty easy because of his job doing tree trimming work and sometimes he would take a car in on part trade for his work.
As years went on, he went his different way, was married and divorced having a son and a daughter, and got married again several years to his second wife Arlene - and they had two sons - Matt and John. Later on his son Matt and his wife would give Roger a grandaughter, Katie. I was fortunate enough to run into him eight years ago and find out he had been doing some moving around until he decided to come back to Fort Wayne. It was then I found out he had some serious medical problems that he didn`t know for sure he would be able to make it through or not. It turns out he had developed respiratory problems from the spray he used while doing tree work. He fought on valiantly for several years until the day before Christmas Eve, 2005 when he went to be with the Lord.
There is one thing for sure - I am a better person because he was my friend and will never find someone like him again.
