On June 22, 1926, fire destroyed Francis' and Mabel's home in Mechanicville, New York. Five children lost their lives as a result of the fire. Francis, aged 10, went back into the home and saved his baby brother, Seth. Francis, the father, also went back into the home but was unable to save any of the other children.
