Culvertown was named for Charles Culver, one of the first residents of the area. It was located west of the Pere Marquette railroad depot near the flats.

Portland, Mich., March 1, 1909 - Charles G. Culver, eight-four years old, a resident of Portland since 1855, is dead at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles A. Knox. He was born in Berkshire county, Mass. He is survived by four children. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at the house.
