Raymond L. Abendroth, 84, of Vandalia and formerly of Brownstown, died at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2009, at Vandalia Terrace in Vandalia.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday at Claggett Funeral Home in Brownstown, with Jim Dann officiating. Burial was in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia, with military rites accorded by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9770 of Brownstown. Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home, with Masonic services held at 6:30 p.m. Memorials: Shriners' Children's Hospital in St. Louis or Brownstown Fire Department.

Mr. Abendroth was born on June 11, 1924, in Loogootee in rural Fayette County, the son of Albert and Dora Zimmer Abendroth. He married Opal C. Reynolds in 1947; she died in 1986.

He was a retired bus driver, carpenter and restaurant operator. He attended Liberty Christian Church in rural Brownstown, was a charter member and former member of Brownstown VFW Post 9770, a past member of the Brownstown Fire Department, and a member of St. Elmo Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite of Belleville, Ainad Temple of East St. Louis and Golden Years Club in Brownstown. He served in the Army during World War II.

He is survived by sons, Ervie Abendroth and his wife Ellen of Vandalia, and Randy Abendroth; brothers, Marvin Abendroth and Earl Abendroth, both of St. Elmo; sisters, Mary Ellen Kilzer and Marlene Lewis, both of Brownstown; grandchildren, Stephanie and Denver; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Dora Linnie; three brothers; and six sisters.
