Lt. Col., 4th Consolidated Tennessee Infantry Regiment, CSA.

Son of James F. and Mary Bright Drake. He graduated in 1860 at the University of North Carolina. When the war broke out he enlisted in Co. K, 2nd Tennessee Infantry, CSA and fought at First Manassas. The regiment was transferred west and he fought at Shiloh where he was wounded. He was elected second lieutenant and later promoted to captain and served in the regiment throughout the war in the hard campaigns and battles of the Army of Tennessee. He was again wounded, this time severely, at the Battle of Peachtree Creek, near Atlanta. He was in hospital for over two months and was not well enough to rejoin the regiment until it was on the retreat from Tennessee in December 1864. He fought at Bentonville, North Carolina and was promoted lieutenant colonel in the reorganization of the Army of Tennessee. After the surrender, he returned to Tennessee. He resumed his studies in medicine and graduated from the University of Nashville in 1867. In addition to being a physician, Col. Drake edited "The Annals of the Army of Tennessee, and Early Western History". He was appointed postmaster at Winchester, Tennessee in 1897.
