He was serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in Iwo Jima when he was killed in action. Born in globe on Oct. 7, 1924, he was a student at Globe High School when he enlisted. His body was given a military escort from the airport by Henry Berry Post, American Legion, and full military honors were given graveside. Veterans attending wore their uniforms. Globe stores closed for one hour during the funeral services.

He was survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesus Tapia; five brothers, Jesus, Manuel, William, James and Michael; and three sisters, Lydia, Sallie and Annie, all of Globe. His brothers, Jesus and William, served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
