Dr. Richard Bishop Meek, husband and beloved father, went home April 1, 2002 from the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Richard was born April 9, 1930 at the Meek Ranch house in Riverdale, Idaho, a son of Benjamin Anton and Grace Olivia Bishop Meek. Richard was the 6th of 8 children. He went to grade school in Riverdale and graduated from Preston High school. He attended Brigham Young University, Utah State University, and Northwestern University in Chicago, where he graduated with a doctorate in dental surgery. He practiced dentistry in Grace, Idaho and Southgate California. He earned a master's degree in orthodontics at the University of Southern California and practiced orthodontics in Pocatello for 30 years.
He married Lucy Carroll Larson, May 28, 1954 for time and eternity in the Logan LDS Temple. Richard and Lucy were blessed with six children, Carl, Reed, Kristen, David, Cynthia, and Earl. They have resided in Pocatello for the last 35 years.
Richard was an avid skier since before the days of chair lifts. He taught all of his children and many of his grandchildren to ski. He loved the outdoors and hunted and fished in his earlier days. He regularly took his family on camping and hiking trips through his beloved Idaho.
Richard devoted his life to the service of others. He gave that service through his profession, his church, his devotion to his family, and his commitment to the Boy Scouts of America. His career as a leader in scouting began in 1950 as the Scoutmaster of the Riverdale, Idaho LDS Ward. In 1958-62 he served as a counselor in the Bishopric in Grace, Idaho were he supervised the Scouting program as a chartered organization representative. He served on the High Council of the Norwalk California Stake. In 1968-75 he served in the Young Men's program of the Pocatello 28th Ward as Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, and Young Men's President. From 1974-80 worked in the Wood Badge program as staff, course director and regional coordinator. He was awarded the Silver Beaver in 1978. In 1980-85 he served as the Bishop of the Pocatello 42nd Ward where he was able to provide a strong scouting program for the young men in that ward. He also served on the High Council of the Pocatello Idaho University Stake. He was honored with the District Award of Merit and was inducted into the Grand Teton Council Hall of Fame in April 2001. He has four sons and two grandsons who have earned their Eagle Scout awards.
Professionally he has served as President of the Pocatello Dental Society, the Idaho Dental Association, and the Idaho Orthodontics Society.
Richard B. Meek's most outstanding characteristic was his constant, consistent commitment to the scouting program over a lifetime. Much of his free and vacation time was spent, year after year, involved in scouting activities. He has been on countless camping trips, in all seasons of the year, with the Scouts. He was famous for taking boys winter camping and teaching them the skills required to keep warm and comfortable in below zero weather. Boys who had him as Scoutmaster remember the weeks spent at summer camps and on high adventure treks in the beautiful mountains of central Idaho.
Also, noteworthy is his extensive involvement with the Wood Badge Program, and his desire to strengthen Scouting through training leaders to provide high quality programs for Scouts.
Richard is survived by his wife Lucy Carroll Larson, his children Carl Richard Meek (Chelane Scherbel), Reed Harold Meek (Sandy Probst), Kristen Sharp (David), David Benjamin Meek (Amy Sheppard), Cynthia James (Tracy), and Earl Larson Meek; his brothers and sisters Ariel W. Meek (Barbara Swensen), Fern Meek, Lucile Larson (Dennis), Jean Marie Smith Perry (Glenn), Wilford Bishop Meek (Carma Schow); and 16 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Raymond Bishop Meek, Arthur Bishop Meek and Earl Bishop Meek.
