John was the son of Russian immigrants Elisabetha "Lizzie" Berger and Frank Schaff.

John was inducted into the U.S. Army on May 11, 1918, in Mandan, ND. He was sent to Camp Fremont in California. He was honorably discharged at Camp Fremont on December 10, 1918. After his discharge, John returned to Mandan, ND, and, in 1920, was found living with his brother and sister-in-law, Jacob and Veronica Schaff. He was employed as a timekeeper for with the rail road.

In 1930, he had moved to Los Angeles, CA, where he was employed as a laborer in building construction.

In 1940 and 1950, John was a resident of the Veterans Home of California in Yountville, CA. Based on his death location of Napa County listed on his California death index record, it's likely that he died there.
