James Warren Ashford was the son of Elmer Lorenzo "Ren" Ashford and his wife Annie Lucinda Robertson. James was the grandson of William Haemer Ashford and Amanda Jane Sullivan, and the grandson of Benjamin E. Robertson and Amy Simmons. James served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, serving from July 23, 1943 to November 22, 1945. He was a crew chief and worked on the Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the atomic bombs on Japan.

On June 5, 1943 James Warren Ashford married Maxine Dolly Kautz. Their children were: Dolly Marina Ashford born and died in 1944, Marina Juanita born in 1945, Louis born in 1947, and Lynda born in 1952. James and Maxine adopted Robin at birth in 1966. Maxine died in 1975 at the age of 53.

After Maxine's death, James Warren Ashford married Hazel May Brooks (or Hazel Kohls) on June 4, 1977, in Columbia County, Oregon.
