Surviving is one son, Philip D. Schafer of Ann Arbor, MI; two sister, Mary Huffman of Wabash, IN, and Ruth Rich of Peru, IN; one brother, Paul Schafer of Bluffton, IN; and several nieces and nephews.
He was superintendent of the Bedford and North Lawrence Community Schools from 1956 until his retirement in 1981, after which he became the first dean of the Bedford campus of Oakland City College. He held a bachelor of science degree from Manchester College, and master of science and doctor of education degrees from Indiana University, as well as an honorary doctor of humanities degree from Oakland City University. He was instrumental in forming the North Lawrence Community School Foundation in 1967, serving on its board of directors until January 1, 1999. He had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and before coming to Bedford he had served as superintendent of the Marshall County Schools in Plymouth and the Rensselaer City Schools. He was a long time member of the United Methodist Church and the Rotary Club, and was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. He was a life member of the the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents and a Sagamore of the Wabash.
There will be a memorial service for Dan Schafer at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 15th, at the First United Methodist Church with Robert Poinsett officiating, assisted by Lee Hutchinson,, Jim Pounds Perry Mullis, Mayor John Williams, and the Rev. Curtis Hurley. The body was cremated and the ashes will be interred at the Cresthaven Mausoleum.
