Mr. Karl Namken, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Namken of Rowena, killed instantly in an auto accident on July 4

Karl Namken, 18 years old, was killed at 10 a.m on Wednesday, July 4, when the car he and Albert Strakos were driving went off the road and overturned, halfway between Rowena and Ballinger on Highway 30. The two young people planned to attend the July 4th car races in Abilene.
The cause of the accident was a defective rod that had become detached from the steering mechanism, which caused control to be lost. The car ran off the road and overturned with Namken under it. Strakos was thrown out and escaped without further injuries.
Namken died a few seconds after Strakos pulled him out. The body was brought to Rowena and the doctor's examination showed that his skull was dented in two places.
The car was an old stripped-down Ford, bought by Namken just a few days earlier, which only had two seats attached to the gasoline tank.
Karl is mourned by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Namken, and three young brothers. At the time of the calamity, his mother was in Vernon with the two youngest sons, recovering from an operation in San Antonio. His father was visiting a relative in San Antonio. The incident was immediately reported to look both parents.
The funeral services took place in the grieving house at 9 am. and the Zoar Evangelical Church, conducted by Pastor Mohr, and at the Protestant cemetery.
The following people attended the funeral of the deceased: Mr. and Mrs. Friedr. Schur, Mr. and Mrs. Ernst Schur, Mr. and Mrs. Karl Schur, Mr. and Mrs. Hermann Peters, Mr. and Mrs. Schwarz from Vernon; Mr. and Mrs. Hy. Namken, Mr. and Mrs. August Krempin, Messrs. Gustav, Otto, and August Namken and Wm. Bloh from Giddings; as well as Richard Toepper, Iraan, Texas.
