THE OKLAHOMAN (Oklahoma City, OK)
3/21/1930 Sooners to Pay Tribute At Bier of Beloved Dean In Campus Rites Today (Friday)
School, State Mourn Death Of J.S. Buchanan, Who Died Thursday
Norman, March 20 – The University of Oklahoma will pay its last tribute to Dr. James Shannon Buchanan, revered university vice-president, who died Thursday morning at his home here, at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon when Dr. W.B. Bizzell, president, will read the funeral service in the university auditorium.
While the flag in front of the administration building flies at half-mast, the thousands of students, faculty members and alumni of the state school will file past the bier in the university auditorium where the body will be in state from 10:30 to 12 o'clock Friday morning.
A military guard made up of junior and senior students in the university R.O.T.C. will stand guard over the casket, and will escort the body to the I.O.O.F. cemetery here, where burial will be made.
After Doctor Bizzell reads the funeral service, Rev. Harry J. Bray, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, will offer prayer for the aged educator, who has been an elder in the Presbyterian church at Norman for the last 15 years.
Thus will "Uncle Buck," as he was affectionately known to his students and friends in the university where he spent 37 years of his life.
Doctor Buchanan died at 4:50 o'clock Thursday morning after an illness which has extended over a period of two years. Two weeks ago, it was learned that "Uncle Buck" had suffered a more severe heart attack and was dangerously ill.
Doctor Buchanan is survived by his wife, two sons, William Buchanan, a student in the university, and James Buchanan, an attorney at Barnsdall, and a daughter, Mrs. Frances Toombs of Chicago. Mrs. Toombs will be unable to attend the funeral due to the serious illness of her baby.
Doctor Buchanan was born at Franklin, Tenn., Oct. 14, 1864. He obtained his bachelor of science degree at Cumberland university, Lebanon, Tenn., in 1885 and came to Oklahoma. He was married the following year to Vinnie Galbraith of Terrell, Texas. He began his career at the state university in 1895, coming there from Central State Teachers' college at Edmond, as a member of the history department faculty.
Doctor Buchanan was a member of the American History association, the Missouri Valley Historical society, the Oklahoma Historical society, Beta Theta Pi fraternity and Phi Beta Kappa scholarship fraternity.
