To the eye of the casual reader there is nothing unusual in this brief announcement to awaken very definite sympathy, for those who mourn her loss—there may be, perhaps a sigh for the bereaved and sorrowing, But to those of us, who knew and loved her—to those acquainted with her rare domestic virtues—her loving care for her family—her devoted friendship—her graceful hospitality—her tender, womanly charities—her bright, sunny nature, that attracted to her, both the young and the old—her unstinted generosity—and her beautiful Christian character, there is much in those words, to awaken our grief and stimulate our longing for the sweet voice—and the vanquished form of her, we loved and mourn. It was the writer’s privilege to meet Mrs. Erwin in her early married life—to know her well and intimately—to feel the strongest attachment for her—and succeeding years have only augmented the friendship, so auspiciously begun. What a pang it brought, to know that distance and separation prevented an interview, before she bade farewell to earth!
Always tender and true, she was so frank and affectionate that all who approached her, felt her influence. Sickness and distress, only brought to light the courage and constancy of this dear friend. Always graceful and bright, she extracted something cheerful from the gloomiest surroundings. Earth can never supply her place to the desolate husband and motherless children. She was ever the true Christian—faithful wife—devoted mother—unflinching friend. Death had no terrors for her, the husband writes: May God grant us a meeting beyond the Jordan of death! –R. A. F
