Mrs. Mabel Frances Sledge Hicks, 94, died March 8, 2006. Though her passing brings momentary sadness to those who knew and cherished her, an eternal homecoming celebration is just beginning.

She was born June 27, 1911, in Bay City, Texas, a daughter of Kentucky natives, the late Robert and Addie Sledge. She graduated from Duke (Oklahoma) High School, helped rear a number of nieces and nephews, then attended Draughn's Business School in Oklahoma City before marriage to the late Gifford R. Hicks. She was a resident of the Oklahoma Panhandle's Yarbrough community and Guymon for 45 years, lived in Cushing 15 years, Edmond 5 years, and Stillwater the past year. Her career, in addition to raising six children and farming, included co-ownership in a company that designed and sent quilts from coast to coast, nursing in both Elkhart and Guymon, as well as clothing sales in Guymon.

Mabel was a devoted Christian, taught Baptist Sunday School and helped with a neighborhood charity pantry until she was in her mid-eighties, and was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She cherished membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, was a charter member of the Oklahoma Panhandle DAR, and a serious student of genealogy all of her life.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Loyd Vaughn of Stillwater, son and daughter-in-law Jim and Monica Hicks of Montgomery, Texas, son and daughter-in-law Curtis and Brenda Hicks of Little Elm, Texas, son and daughter-in-law Darryl and Karen Hicks of Flower Mound, Texas, son and daughter-in-law Wendell and Treva Hicks of Skiatook and daughter and son-in-law Sheila and Russ Killingsworth of Edmond; 12 grandchildren, Gerald Vaughn (South Carolina), Rev. Steve Vaughn (Texas), Travis Vaughn (Oklahoma), Randal Hicks (Alaska), Kimberly Hicks (Georgia), Lindsay Hicks (Texas), James K. "Jake" Hicks, Jr. (Texas), Steven Hicks (Texas), Charnee Barker (Washington), David Hicks (Texas), Matthan Beard (Oklahoma) and Leah Beard (Oklahoma) and 11 great-grandchildren. She leaves behind a host of beloved family members and friends.

A celebration of her home-going will be held at 1 p.m., Monday March 13, at the First Baptist Church, Cushing.

Memorial gifts to honor Mabel Hicks may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 187 Cushing or to the Cal Farley's Boy's Ranch, P.O. Box 1890 Amarillo, Texas, 79174.
