Hurley Anderson Jr. Killed In Dispute

Murder charges were filed against Malakoff Mobil Station operator, R. M. Bowman, in connection with the shooting death of Hurley Anderson, Jr., 33, a Dallas man, which occurred here Wednesday during the noon hour.

Sheriff J. W. Brownlow said the charges were filed with Justice of the Peace J. D. Waller. Bowman's bond was set at $3,000.00 pending a grand jury investigation.

The shooting grew out of a property dispute of long standing between Anderson's parents and Bowman who owned adjoining property on West Highway 31. During recent months, it is understood that both parties had had their property surveyed in an attempt to settle the boundary dispute. Sheriff Brownlow said that he had been consulted by Hurley Anderson, Sr. and Bowman regarding the problem and that he had advised them to get the matter settled in court.

It was reported that Anderson Sr. had spoken to County Attorney Bill Hart regarding the matter also.

Wednesday morning prior to the shooting Bowman secured the services of county equipment to excavate a ditch along the property boundary in question. The younger Anderson arrived from Dallas and observed the excavation. It was reported that his parents attempts to restrain the victim from going over to the Bowman property failed.

Mr. and Mrs. Bowman are said to have heard the loud conversation at the Anderson home as the Dallas man walked to the driveway of the Bowman Mobil Station armed with a twelve gauge shotgun. Before the shooting Mrs. Bowman is said to have tried to get the operator on the telephone in order to get the sheriff's department and by the time she got the operator, five minutes later, the shooting had occurred. The sheriff's officers identified the charged man's weapon as a rifle.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Allen Street Baptist Church for Anderson. He was a former resident of Malakoff and was employed at the Dallas Post Office.

Anderson is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hurley Anderson Sr. of Malakoff and his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Anderson of Dallas.

Brown Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
