John graduated from Yale College in 1710 and was ordained as the first settled pastor of the Congregational Church at Hebron (CT) in October of 1717. He was dismissed in 1734 and was fined by the County Court at Hartford, CT because of "dissenting" views. He then joined the Episcopal Church where he was a lay reader for the rest of his life.
