Azariah was a Private in the Civil War. He enlisted in Company E, New Jersey 21st Infantry Regiment on September 15, 1862. Azariah was mustered out on June 19, 1863 in Trenton, New Jersey. He was captured at the Battle of Fredricksburg and spent several harrowing months in the infamous Libby Prison.

After the war, Azariah prospered as a farmer in Ewing and West Windsor Townships, before retiring to Hamilton Square. He served as Hamilton Township Clerk and Assessor.

Azariah married Jeannette Hutchinson in 1864 and fathered two daughters.
