~•♥•~ The Eulogy for Charles S. Smeton ~•♥•~
By Patricia Smeton, daughter

They say your earliest memories are often your strongest memories. This was especially true for my father. I can remember the many stories he told me over the years.

Of his early childhood in the 1920's and what times were like then. How a quart of milk cost a dime and a loaf of bread cost a nickel.

Of his adolescent years in the 1930's when the country entered the great depression and times were hard for him and his eight brothers and sisters. How he would put newspaper in his shoes when the soles wore thin to make them last a little longer.

Of the 1940's when World War II began and he entered the Army. He told many stories of his experiences in the service and the places he was stationed throughout the United States. When I studied these times in history class in school, I felt I had already seen them through my father's eyes.

He loved to talk of the many states he had visited during and after the war. He could recite the capital of every state in the union and many countries throughout the world. I'm sure this is where my love of travel began. Whenever I would tell him of a new place I was planning to visit, he would rattle off half a dozen interesting facts about the location.

In addition to the many stories, these are my childhood memories of my father and my family. Sunday drives in the country with stops for ice cream. Watching my brothers play baseball. Vacations to Canada and Myrtle Beach and other places. As time went by, cruises to Bermuda and the Caribbean.

My father loved to work in his garden. He would share the vegetables he grew with many friends throughout the neighborhood. Then there are the more recent memories with his five grandchildren that he couldn't get enough of.

The snow on the ground outside brings one of my favorite memories of my Dad. Waking up many years ago one Christmas morning, looking out my bedroom window onto the backyard, and seeing the words "Merry Xmas" spelled out in my father's footprints in the snow.

So you see, with all of these great stories and wonderful memories, he's not really gone, because he'll live in our hearts forever.
