Alexander H. Bernhard Jr., owner and operator of his own accounting firm and a decorated World War II Army veteran, died Friday (Aug. 6, 1999).

In 1944, he was wounded and captured by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge of World War II. He was held prisoner of war for the duration of the war. After his release, he was cited for gallantry by the U.S. Army. He was also presented the Silver Star and two Purple Hearts.

Later, he was recalled to duty during the Korean War. After that, he stayed in the Army. Eventually, his duties changed from artillery to finance, and he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel.

He retired from the Army in 1966. After his retirement, he maintained his own practice as a certified public accountant in El Paso for 33 years. He was 79.

Survivors include his son, John Allen Bernhard his sister, Gene Brandenberger and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine "JoB."

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today in Martin Funeral Home West. Funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday in First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
