In his youth he, with his parents, moved to Rock Grove, Illinois. From here he heard President Lincoln's call for 500,000 volunteers and was sworn Into the U. S. army Sept. 10, 1861, as a private in Co. B 46th Regiment of Illinois Vol. Inft., at Springfield, Ill.
He participated in the battle of Fort Donaldson, Ky., Feb. 16, 1862, and Shilo April 6 of the same year. At the battle of Hatchie he was severely wounded in the arm and furloughed home, but returned to his regiment and served in all of the engagements in which his regiment participated until the close of the war.
He was mustered out of the service at Baton Rouge, La., January 20, 1866 and was discharged at Springfield, Ill., Feb. 2, 1866.
February 24, 1871, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Cooper. To this union were born three children: Frank Boyd, Horton; Roy Boyd, Plainfield; Hazel Boyd, Plainfield.
Thirty-eight years ago they moved to Plainfield, Iowa, were Mr. Boyd engaged in business till about 1910, when he retired on account of failing health.
He leaves to mourn his death Mrs. Elizabeth Boyd, Frank, Roy and Hazel Boyd, besides a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday at 2:30 o'clock at the Baptist church, Rev. VanVenschoten of Horton conducting the services. Burial in Willow Lawn cemetery.
