Riley, the son of Simeon & Martha Ellen (Bell) Richards, married Stella Frances Richards, daughter of Louis and Martha Jane (Ellis) Sowers. Their children were: Ollie Edward, Ira Lee, Bessie Ellen, Daisy Frances, and Herbert Hadley.

On September 12, 1918, Riley, age 40, and Stella were living in Beamon, Pettis County, Missouri, when he registered for the WWI draft. His date of birth is recorded as March 18, 1878. He was self employed as a farmer. His physical description was tall, medium build, brown eyes, and brown hair.

Riley's grandson, Leo Richards, described his grandfather as a "tobacco chewing farmer" who ran the local sawmill. He remembers that the sawmill had two big circular saws, one on top of the other. He was known as a good carpenter who worked in the community building homes, barns, and sheds.

"Celebrate Birthdays At Richards Home
A most enjoyable day was spent at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Riley Richards of Beaman, route I, Sunday, June 5th, in the celebration of the birthday of Mrs. Richards and daughter, Mrs. Ira Smith of Sedalia. Also sharing in the honors of the day were Mrs. Moe Braman, Mrs. Sally Woods, Mrs. Simmons and Les Wilson, who celebrate birthdays in the month of June. At the noon hour a basket dinner to which all contributed was served including twelve delicious birthday cakes. The day was whiled away with music and conversation and all departed at a late hour wishing each honoree many more happy birthdays. ...

Mr. and Mrs., Richards had with them on this occasion their five children and their families, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Richards and son, Harold; Mr. and Mrs. Ola Richards and children, Leo, Loy, Howard, Dean and Patti; Mr. and Mrs. Ira Smith and sons, Kenneth and Richard, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Leftwich and children, Charles, Betty and Bessie and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Richards." >/i>
