He served as a Private with Company A of the 71st Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry, also known as the 1st Regiment, California Volunteer Infantry, from May 21, 1861 to June 12, 1864, and then with the 69th Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry, Company F, until his discharge on June 19, 1865. He was a prisoner from June 22 to November 26, 1864. He worked as a cake baker. He was originally buried in Palmer Vault.
