Emma Blanchard Ellis was born near Princeville, September 27, 1846, the oldest child of Marshal Mason and Amanda (Bliss) Blanchard. She was one of a family of 8 children, all having died except Alonzo Blanchard of Peoria, and Rosetta Blanchard Mitchell of Stanton, Nebraska.
She was married to Benjamin F. Ellis Feb. 18, 1869, at Princeville, Ill., as also was her sister Rosetta to James M. Mitchell, it being a double wedding. The three others of the party are still living.
She was the mother of four children, Maud Holmes, now of Brimfield, and at whose home her death occurred, Frederick Ellis, who died about 24 years ago, Forrest W. Ellis now living at Spearfish, SD., and Carl V. Ellis of Mitchell, S. Dak. She leaves nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She had been a member of the Methodist church for the past twenty-five years. A loving mother whose life interest was in her children and home.
She was stricken with paralysis Sept. 18, 1922, and was confined to her bed for over 21 months, a patient and uncomplaining sufferer. About four weeks ago it was discovered that she had a cancer from which she suffered intense pain until she sank peacefully to sleep at 5:45 o’clock, Thursday evening June 12, 1924, surrounded by her husband who has been confined to the home for nearly four months and who had cared for her much of the time prior to his being taken to the hospital in March, her only daughter, Maud, her brother Lon and his wife and a few loving neighbors and friends.
Mrs. Ellis spent all her life in Peoria County, except four years in Nebraska, three year in S. Dakota, and four years in southern Illinois. In 1919, Mr. and Mrs. Ellis celebrated their golden wedding in Brimfield.
The funeral service was held at the home of Mrs. Maud Holmes on Saturday at 10 o’clock conducted by Rev. W. Harvey Young.
She was tenderly laid to rest in the Princeville Cemetery by the side of her son, Fred. Many Princeville relatives were present at the cemetery.
Those from out of town who attended the funeral of the late Mrs. BF Ellis; Mr. Clarence Bliss and wife, Mrs. Olive Matthews, Mr. Luther Bliss, wife and daughter, Sarah, all of Yates City; Mr. and Mrs. LA Blanchard of Peoria; Mrs. Wes Ellis and daughter Frances of Bloomington; Mrs. Nellie Bristol, Mr. and Mrs. JM Colgan of Wyoming and Winifred Prentice of Princeville.
