Thomas "Tom" May and Sarah "Sallie" Ann Rumfield May were married August 1879. Tom was born in Surrey County, England, in 1849. He served in the British Army in his early years and came to the USA in 1874. His parents were Henry May, Sr. and Jane Hicks. He had fifteen brothers and sisters. Sallie was the daughter of Henry Rumfield and Elizabeth Farris. Henry was from Pennsylvania and Elizabeth was from Tennessee and the daughter of Richard Farris and Matilda Farris. Tom's brother Henry May, Jr. also came to Madison County from England. He was married to Sarah Jane Donaho. They had seven children: Henry May II, Rosie May, Lizzie May, Fannie May, George May, John Robert May and Fred May. After Sarah's death, he married Polly Ann Moran Powell and had five children: Jenny May, Johnnie May, Dewey May, Thomas May and Lillie Bell May. Thomas and Sallie were known all over the county as "Uncle Tom and Aunt Sallie." They had a general store in North Zulch which they began with Thomas' nephew, Thomas Jr., who came from Hastings, England in 1908. Tom Jr. returned to England in 1916. Tom and Sallie had two daughters: Laura Elizabeth May, born in 1880 and Minnie Jane May, born in 1890. Laura married Lee Roy Byrd and had five children: Georgia Maybell Byrd, Frank Byrd, Thomas Byrd, Minnie Burney Byrd and Annie Rooney Byrd. Frank and Thomas each died at the age of 21. Laura died November 20, 1968 and is buried in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. (There are four paragraphs about Minnie and her children. Dorothy May, who wrote the article, is one of these children.) Tom died October 20, 1930 and Sallie died on January 12, 1941, both are buried at Willowhole Cemetery. (Madison County History book II submitted by Dorothy May of Bryan.)
