Captain Julian Arnold Jr., U.S. Navy, retired, 88, died April 11 at his residence in Claxton. The Fulton County native had lived in Evans County for the past 20 years. He was a 1943 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, and served 24 years in the Navy as a fighter pilot and test pilot. Subsequent to his Navy career, Jay joined Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in Marietta, Georgia, and rose to the position of Director of Safety Assurance and Environmental Affairs. He retired from Lockheed in 1987 after 22 years.
Jay leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Dorothy (Dot) Arnold; one son, Jim Arnold of Claxton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Jack Daniel of Surrency and Carol Ann and Dennis Fischer of Claxton; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A son, Bob Arnold, pre-deceased Jay in 1991.
Services for Jay will take place at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 15 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Glennville Memorial Gardens.
