Mary Irene Edmundson was born of the union between Franklin Edmundson and Maria Ella Penrose in the Quaker community of Coal Creek, Iowa. She was the youngest of three surviving children that included her brothers James Alton and Charles Vogel. The family of five moved to Pleasant Mount (now called Mt. Pleasant), Missouri in 1896 where they lived and farmed the land. Ella became pregnant with Harry, who died at birth and Ella died days later in 1901. Following Ella's death and with three young children to care for, Franklin asked Ella's sister Alice Penrose to come to Missouri from Iowa to help raise the children and run the household while he farmed the land. In 1903 Franklin married Alice who became step mother to her sister's three children. From about 1909-1911, Frank, Alice & Irene moved to Barnesville, OH where Irene was enrolled in the Olney Friends Boarding School (Quaker boarding School). After graduating from Olney (circa 1912) , Frank, Alice and Irene moved to Fairhope, AL, where she met and married Jackson F. Beaty 12 May 1916; they were blessed with three children: Raymond, Winifred and Samuel Franklin.
