Susan Bouquet, and was born March 20, 1859, in Luxembourg, Germany, she always said she was from "Alsace Lorraine", a daughter of Frank and Katherine Bouquet, who arrived in 1864 and were early settlers in Caledonia Houston County. She was married to Valentine Schwebach at Caledonia on October 10, 1878, and shortly afterward they moved to Le Mars Iowa where they operated a Saloon and Billard Parlor. In about 1884 they moved to White Lake, SD where they operated businesses with his brothers Eugene and John.

In about 1890 they moved back to LeMars Iowa. After Valentine died in Le Mars, IA, Susan returned to Caledonia where she operated the above mentioned confectionery store which the Bishop helped her obtain. The former store is now an empty lot and is across the street south of the library.

Susan returning to Caledonia with her family in 1891, started store in 1893, worked in the store and lived behind & above until her death. Daughter Margaret never married and lived with Susan and helped operate the store in her later years. Gary Coneryea, Susan's great grandson, tells us that Susan was called Grosmamma. No one now knows the origin of that nick name.

Caledonia Journal-- Thursday, December, 28, 1950
Funeral services were held Thursday morning, De. 21, at nine o'clock at St. Peter's Catholic Church for Mrs. Susan Schwebach, aged 91, who passed away Monday night at her home in Caledonia after a seek's illness. She had been quite active until about a year ago. Deceased was the former Susan Bouquet, and was born March 20, 1859, in Luxembourg, Germany, a daughter of Frank and Katherine Bouquet, who were early day settlers in this community. She was married to Valentine Schwebach at Caledonia on October 10, 1878, and shortly afterward they moved to White Lake, SD. The family lived there until Mr. Schwebach died in 1891 when Mrs. Schwebach returned to Caledonia and opened a confectionery and continued to operate the business until her daughter, Margaret, took over the management. Mrs. Schwebach is survived by four daughters, Margaret, Caledonia; Mrs. Frank Weber, DeRidder, LA; Mrs. Mary Demmer, Winona; and Mrs. F.J. Billow, Decorah, IA; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was a charter member of St. Mary's Altar Society and a member of the Third Order of St. Francis. The Rev. A.E. Wermerskirchen officiated at the services and burial was made in Calvary cemetery. There was a touch of sadness in the heart as Caledonia business people paused on Thursday morning while a parish priest prayed that eternal rest be granted unto Mrs. Susan Schwebach. "There was a touch of sadness and yet parting is such sweet sorrow" when it leaves an entire community mindful of the worthiness of the life departed. Widowed with a family of six, Mrs. Schwebach found no state agencies ready to help her with her problems. Leaning only on her faith in the Almighty she went about working out her own salvation with tireless determination and hopeful courage. Throughout this land of ours there are former Caledonians who, like those of us here at home, will for ever remember the tinkling of a small musical bell which sounded as the latch was lifted and a person passed thru the doorway of the Schwebach store. They will forever find it pleasant to recall how the ringing of that bell brought from her household duties a lady wearing a spotless checkered apron, to wait upon the spending of a child's pennies. The Schwebach store changed little during the half century Mrs. Schwebach stood behind its counters, Few, if any of the so-called modern merchandising methods were adopted. Mrs. Schwebach was too neighborly, too generous of hand, too motherly to make volume of business done and margin of profit to be realized her chief concern.
