Memorial graveside rites for Dale E. Short, 72, Rapid City, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with Chaplain Ned Wick officiating.

Short died Wednesday at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Military rites will be conducted by the Rapid City Veterans of Foreign Wars post. The body has been cremated. Behrens Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established for the Hospice of the Black Hills.

He was born February 5, 1918, at Aurora to Omar and Lola (Corte) Short and grew up at Aurora.

As a young man, he lived and worked with an uncle William Corte, at the Gambles store in Sturgis. He later managed the Gambles store at Spearfish.

On June 21, 1942, he married Wanda Alene Wachter at Sturgis. They lived at Sturgis. They lived at Sturgis until he entered the Army Air Force in 1942. He was discharged from military duty in 1945 and moved to Colman, where he was parts manager for a John Deere and Ford dealership.

In 1957 he moved to Rapid City, where he owned and operated the Rapid City Cycle Center motorcycle dealership. He also owned and managed an auto salvage yard at Deadwood and worked at Rushmore Volkswagen as a service advisor.

Short was a member of the VFW, a charter member of the Jackpine Gypsies at Sturgis, a member of the American Motorcycle Association and the South Dakota National Guard's 109th Engineer Group at Rapid City. He was an expert rifleman.

Among survivors are his wife, of Rapid City; a son Paul Arthur Short of Rapid City; his mother, Lola Stewart of Brookings; a sister, Deota Nelson of Brookings; and two grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.
