John Nathaniel Heiner, a retired Coast Guard captain and a resident of Carmel Valley since 1963, died Saturday morning at Community Hospital after a brief illness.

A native of Baltimore, MD, Mr. Heiner served in the Coast Guard for 37 years, retiring as a captain in 1952.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; daughters Marjorie H. Bartlett of Madison, Wis., and Joan H. Webster of Kawkawlis, Mich., and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church in Carmel Valley.

The Paul Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
