William Franklin "Jack" Callaway was born in Clinton, Missouri, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Callaway. On September 9, 1916, he married Dorothy Brown. They were the parents of one child.
Jack Callaway was one of the foremost experts on submarines in the US Navy and, in 1927, was a submarine Inspector stationed in Washington, DC.
On December 17, 1927, Jack was aboard the US submarine S-4 when it was involved in a collision with the Coast Guard destroyer Paulding. The S-4 sank. Six men were alive for awhile, but the rescue effort had to be called off due to harsh weather. At that point, veteran divers said there was not a chance of survival for the six men left on the S-4.
The bodies of the officers and crew of the S-4 were recovered on Friday, Jan 6, 1928. Lt. Commander William Franklin "Jack" Callaway was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday, Jan 10, 1928 with full military honors.
A bronze plaque in his memory was dedicated by the Daughters of the American Revolution at Englewood Cemetery in Clinton, Missouri on October 14, 1928.
