Dougald McPhail was born in Scotland and came to the United States around 1772 on a boat containing his sister, Isabella, his brother Daniel; James Daniel Geddie and possibly two of his brothers; and the remainder of the boat load were Maxwells. They settled somewhere in the valley of the Cape Fear River, around Fayetteville, probably some miles east or south of Fayetteville, North Carolina

Daniel McPhail's heirs sold 125 acres, except for one-half acre that contained the family burial ground. The heirs sold the land to Thomas Murphy. A transcript of the deed may be found
