Ruby Amon Bacon Thompson's life will be remembered at a graveside service at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, April 14, 2009, in the Portales Cemetery with Rev. Walter Huber officiating. Her great-grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Ruby Thompson completed her life's journey at the age of 94 on April 11, 2009, at the Retirement Ranch in Clovis. She was born in Evansville, AR on August 22, 1914, to Amon and Lelah Bacon. When she was a small child she moved to New Mexico. She went to school at Floyd and graduated from high school there as Salutatorian in 1936. She particularly excelled in spelling. On December 13, 1932, in Clovis, she married Joseph Henry Thompson. To this union was born one daughter, Nina Jo. Ruby and Joe made their home in the Floyd Community where they farmed until 1952. They then moved to Portales where Ruby was a homemaker, helped with the farming, and in later years worked for ENMU as a housekeeper until her retirement. She and Joe were an inseparable couple who were devoted to each other and enjoyed 59 years of married life. After the loss of Joe, she then moved to Golden Acres in Portales where she enjoyed the social activities with all her friends and neighbors. After her 90th birthday, as her health became more frail, Ruby moved to Retirement Ranch in Clovis where she spent the remainder of her life.
Ruby was a long-time member of University Baptist Church in Portales. She was a cherished, wise, and loved woman who leaves us with many happy memories. She loved to cook, clean, garden, paint, crochet, knit and do all kinds of crafts. Her fun-loving personality and infectious laugh would always light up any room. Her positive attitude, courage, hard work, and determination helped her with her life's challenges and was an inspiration and an example to those who loved her. Admired by family, friends, and strangers alike for her kindness and caring attitude, she will be missed by all.
Ruby is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nina Jo and Stanley Bilberry of Portales; her grandchildren, Vickie Gardner, Mike Bilberry and Sandy Chenault; seven great-grandchildren and one sister, Cecil Faye Watkins of Portales. She was preceded in death by her parents, Amon and Lelah Bacon, three sisters, Eunice Hansen, Mildred Key, and Marguerite Goldman, her brother, A. L. Bacon and by her beloved husband, Joe, who died June 1, 1992.
