He graduated from West Point in 1892 and became a Brigadier General in the United States Army. He was a transportation Officer. He was commander of the 28th Infantry Division during World War I. He received the Army Distinguished Service Medal by an act of Congress on July 9, 1918. He also commanded the 2nd Infantry Brigade and the 178th Infantry Brigade. His units participated in the St. Mihiel offensive and the battle of the Meuse-Argonne.
