Three years later, his father married Eliza Strong, and soon he had many half brothers and sisters. Julia Loughborough Byers was his youngest half-sister, born during the Civil War in 1862.
John Alemuth enlisted in the Confederate army on May 1, 1861 at Corinth, Mississippi. He was 25 years old, single, and like his father, he was a farmer in Water Valley, Mississippi.
He served in the "Panola Vindicators" – Company H, 17th Regiment Mississippi Infantry. He fell at the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 2, 1863, with face and neck wounds and became a prisoner-of-war. He eventually escaped and rejoined his company.
Alemuth (or "A J", as his company knew him) was killed in the Battle of Cedar Creek, near Strasberg, Virginia on October 19, 1864, and may be buried on the battlefield in an unmarked grave. In a letter dated October 24, 1864, Capt. Jesse C. Wright informed Alemuth's father of his death and the circumstances of the battle. He praised his son's dedication and character exhibited during the entire war, and said he considered Alemuth to be a very good friend.
