John A. Hayes, Native of Woodland, Succumbs

John Alphonso Hayes, 65, a native of Woodland, died Sunday morning at his home near Crows Landing, following a long fight against an incurable ailment. He was the son of the late David and Miranda Hayes of Woodland, and was born here in 1871. He received his education in Woodland grammar schools and the old Hesperian College in Woodland.
During school vacations, he spent a large portion of his time on a a large farm owned by his father near Crows Landing Stanislaus county. He lived in Woodland until he was 21 years of age, when he married Lelah E. Horton, daughter of the late Lulu Horton Tucker, and the couple lived in San Francisco for several years.
STARTS RANCHING
In 1919, he moved to the San Joaquin valley, locating near Crows Landing, where he and Clarence F. Day of Woodland have been partners in a farming enterprise.
County Recorder, LeR. Pierce is cousin of Mr. Hayes.
Mr. Hayes was a member of the Blue Lodge No. 488, Patterson Scottish Rite, Conistory No. 9, San Jose and Aahmes Temple, Shrine, of Oakland. He was a 32 degree Mason.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock in Newman, with the minister of Crows Landing Presbyterian church and the Masonic orders in charge. The body will be brought to Woodland, arriving here at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, for burial in Woodland Cemetery.

Manfred Garoutte, a brother-in-law, is interested in several good prospects and Judge Garoutte is doing well both in the practice of his profession and in his mining operations....
