William Postlethwaite born 1760 just before the beginning of the American Revolution, and was the son of John Postlethwaite 1737-1802 who was a soldier and private in Captain William Bell's company, 4th regiment: Lancaster County, Pennsylvania troops in 1776 and commanded by Col. James Byrd. Many family records cite Hannah Wright Postlethwaite 1737-1802 as his mother. It is believed that William was born in the area of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
William also had a step mother, Susannah Irwin Postlethwaite, second wife of his father John Postlethwaite.
