David H. Gray is the son of William Gray and Phoebe Ann Lee.They are from the Nelson and Augusta counties of Virginia.David is the husband of Sarah Jane Parrish,whom also is from Augusta County Virginia as well.David H. Gray is a C.S.A. Army veteran.He first enlisted on 7/21/1861 in the 52nd Va. Inf.(Co. B of Augusta County Va.)under the command of Stonewall Jackson and later Jubal Early.Due to constant Shenandoah Valley military conflict near their Augusta County farm and slave desertion,he sold his farm right after his return from Gettysburg,to move to Wood County,Va.(now W.Va.).Once he completed his family's move there(to Lubeck),he reenlisted into the 17th Va. Cav.(Co. F)"Nighthawk Rangers"(of Wood County)to complete his Confederate service under General Early back east in the Shenandoah valley.He is the father of Jerusha Letcher Padgett and the grandfather of Elmer Lee Padgett,which are buried in Lubeck cemetery.
