Mildred Lavonia Keller Jennings, 105, passed from this life and took her place in the heavenly choir Thursday, April 9, 2009.
Burial: 10 a.m. Wednesday in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Fort Worth. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. in Calvario Funeral Chapel. The family will welcome friends for a time of visitation afterwards from noon to 1 p.m.
Mildred was born Jan. 12, 1904, in Taborville, Mo. After her mother's death, the remaining family moved to Fort Worth, where Mildred lived for most of her life. As she grew older, she also lived in the Santo area and the last few years in Wichita Falls. She was a member of Boulevard United Methodist Church in Fort Worth and a member of the choir there for more than 60 years. She was also a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Santo United Methodist Church.
Mildred was the first in her family to graduate from high school and was a proud graduate of North Side High School in Fort Worth on Jan. 22, 1922. After graduation she worked for Montgomery Ward and was the Wardway Girl who sang solos with its orchestra. While single, she purchased a Model T Ford and the adventures in that car were the source of many family stories.
After her marriage, Mildred was a homemaker and caregiver. She and her husband, B.B. Jennings, raised three children and were very active in their church and community. She visited elderly friends and family frequently over the years and was legal guardian for several. She enjoyed baking bread for family and friends and did this for many years. She was a unique and special person who was much loved and appreciated by her family and friends.
The family would like to express gratitude to the staff at Merrill Gardens and to Senior Care Health and Rehabilation, especially to Gayla, Corkie and Isabell, for their tender, loving care of Mildred. The family would also like to thank the Intentional Caring Unit of First United Methodist Church of Wichita Falls for their visits and gifts.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Leona Marler of Henryetta, Okla.; and brothers, Moreland, Lundy, Maurice and J.D. Keller.
