He was born July 9, 1921 at Stahl, MO to Thomas and Maude (Lloyd) Young.
Both of his parents died from Tuberculosis when Vernon was a boy, and his eldest sister took over the role of raising and caring for her younger siblings. On December 1, 1943 he married Leona Newsham in Marysville, KS. In 1941 and 1942, he helped build the Alaska Highway. He later worked at the Mead Ordnance Plant and as a heavy equipment mechanic for a cattle company. Vernon enjoyed spending time with his family and took them on many memorable vacations and camping trips. He was passionate about his motorcycle and cars.
Vernon was preceded in death by his son Larry, sisters Lucille Fowble, Lowene Young, and Ruby Young, and brother Thomas Young, Jr. He is survived by his wife Leona of Ithaca. daughter Peggy Young and Ron Thoms of Lincoln; granddaughters Wendy Young of Campbellsburg, IN and Keri Young and Edgar Cedillo of Wahoo; great-grandchildren Brianna Young, Devan Young, Jessi Adamczyk, and JoAnne Adamczyk.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 28 at Ithaca United Methodist Church with the Revs. Doug Smith and Armin Vogt officiating. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Don Stillger, Mark Vogt, Milton Eichmeier, and Bob Wagner. Casket Bearers will be Bruce Hageman, Danny Givens, Glen Treptow, Tom Wageman, Chris Simon, Doug Hass, and George Scott. Visitation will be Monday 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Indian Mound Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church.
