A funeral for Perry O. Newton of McMinnville will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, McMinnville, with the Rev. Doug Rose officiating. Private interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, McMinnville.

The funeral home will be open for visitation from noon to 6 p.m. today.

Mr. Newton died Oct. 2, 2002, in Willamette Valley Medical Center, McMinnville. He was 85.

He was born Dec. 30, 1916, in Dayton, the son of Isaac and Bertie O'Dessie Doney Newton. As a young man, he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps.

He and Mary Etta Moore were married Oct. 10, 1937, in Newberg.

He lived in Newberg and Colorado. He moved to Sheridan in 1941 and was a longtime resident there.

He worked at U.S. Plywood in Willamina for many years and also owned and serviced vending machines in the plant. He was a barber in Sheridan for several years.

He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1987.

He and Goldie Smith were married March 26, 1991, in Reno, Nev.

Mr. Newton loved hunting, gardening, fishing and repairing things. Family members said he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Roger Newton of McMinnville; two daughters, Linda Taylor of Dallas and Patricia Trudo of Beaverton; three brothers, Gene Newton of Canby, Myron Newton of Asotin, Wash., and Zane Newton of East Wenatchee, Wash.; three sisters, Bonnie Astleford of Newberg, Violet Baker of Quincy, Wash., and Gladys Strait of Lyle, Wash.; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
