Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Quartermaster, Field and Staff, of the 1st Pennsylvania Volunteer (Three Month) Infantry on April 20, 1861, and served until honorably mustered out on July 24, 1861. He was then commissioned as Captain and commander of Company K, 77th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on December 8, 1861 Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, Field and Staff, on January 31, 1863, he was captured at the September 1863 Battle of Chickamauga, along with most of his regiment. He was imprisoned at Richmond's infamous Libby Prison until he was exchanged in May 1864. His health compromised by the months in Confederate hands, he was detailed to preside over a court-martial board in Nashville, Tennessee until he was honorably mustered out on February 4, 1865.

He served as Mayor of Lancaster, Pennsylvania from 1871 to 1873.
